River Poetry THE RIVER OF LIFE Down the river of life we go In the flimsiest of craft, and so Knowing the end will come to us all We listen for rapids or a waterfall. Maybe around the very next bend, A splendid feast or a dismal end. Keep right on paddling your own canoe. Don't ever give up till the journey's thru. Even if your boat should rock or tip, Be thankful for getting to make the trip. - by D. Edgar Murray Leaving Yosemite We follow the bends of the Merced River out of Yosemite. Lupine blooms along the roadside; periwinkle-blue clumps, scattered in the spring-time green, shock our eyes awake. Redbud blossoms, magenta purple, splash their beauty among the lush riparian overgrowth. Huge boulders sit and brood along the roadside. Around the bend, a rocky outcrop, smooth and long, gathers up the sun's warm rays. Further on, an avalanche of rocks and scree, broken loose from the cliff high above, lay imprisoned behind Caltrans fencing. Once out of the hills, we reach the highway. Our enchanted world has vanished. By Carolyn Uyemura, Sherwood, OR April 2003 ![]() |
